did something happen around 2000ish to make there be so many jrpgs that are overtly critical of organized religion? final fantasy x, tales of symphonia, tales of the abyss, tales of legendia... okay maybe the tales series just has a lot of that

@Felthry i feel like religion started being a common JRPG (and anime) topic in the late 90’s, and my understanding is that Japanese culture is a lot less scared of doing weird things with religious themes in games than western developers might be... like, FF7 (especially advent children) deals with cults... evangelion is DRENCHED in decontextualized religious themes ... etc
