@dodec I mean, dialup in the 80s was over lines optimised for speech, so...
@dodec It's just a matter of whether your compression is due to analog filters or digital ones! there's no way you're going to get DSL, of course, because that worked by bypassing some of those analog filters, but you can do dialup. I think you can even do full 56k.

@Felthry That still sounds like it'd be terrible. Aren't VOIP systems heavily compressed and optimized for speech? What kind of bandwidth can you get out of hooking an acoustic modem to that?
