How hard would it be, I wonder, to make a CRT from scratch
just a black and white one, of course, not going to even attempt this color stuff
@Felthry my guess is "very hard", what with the extremely precise and fast magnetic redirection of an electron beam
@monorail Nah, that's not actually anywhere near as hard as actually making the tube
It's actually quite simple circuitry! just two oscillators, one horizontal and one vertical, and coils at not-quite-90° separation (not quite 90° because the "vertical" is actually slightly off vertical so that the scanlines are horizontal; you take a zigzag and angle it a bit until the zigs are horizontal and the zags are blanking periods anyway)
@monorail the circuitry to drive a CRT is actually simpler by far than the circuitry to drive an LCD panel, simply because you don't have to worry about any of that digital nonsense, just a couple phase-locked free-running oscillators and an analog intensity signal
of course we're also not going to attempt to build a CRT from scratch because we have no experience with glassblowing at all
