region-specific slurs

the existence of words that are horribly offensive slurs in British English and either completely benign or just nonexistent words in American English will never not feel _really weird_ to me

like the word spaz in the US is word for an overly rambunctious child but in the UK is a hugely offensive word for someone with cerebral palsy

and the not-word "paki" is apparently a really offensive word in the UK for someone of middle-eastern or south-asian descent, but in the US we didn't even know that it _wasn't_ the proper term for someone from pakistan until recently (the proper term, breaking the convention of other -stan countries, is "pakistanian")

Are there similar cases of words that are massively offensive in American English but are perfectly ordinary in British English? I can't think of any

region-specific slurs

@Felthry using football for soccer instead of american football

re: region-specific slurs

@pillowcat I don't think that counts as a slur, though!

re: region-specific slurs

@pillowcat now that I think about it a bit more though, "f*g" (not comfortable typing it >.>) is a normal word for a cigarette in british english, and a homophobic slur in american english (though a relatively mild one that's been partially reclaimed)

re: region-specific slurs

@Felthry you'd think it does with how football nerds freak out about it

region-specific slurs

@Felthry "cunt" is a far less acceptable word in the US than it is in Britain or especially Australia.

re: region-specific slurs

@Felthry in the UK ‘faggot’ is both a homophobic slur and a type of food from my area.

re: region-specific slurs

@Brainship I thought it meant a cigarette? But yeah that's one

I think it's also an italian word for a musical instrument (or like, fagotti or something is anyway, from the same origin)

re: region-specific slurs / food photo

@Felthry ah.

Fag does mean a cigarette, but a faggot specifically is one of these.

re: region-specific slurs / food photo

@Brainship so like, meatballs?

re: region-specific slurs / food photo

@Felthry kinda, but they’re made of pork offal, mostly heart and liver with herbs and onions.

Which is then wrapped in pig abdomen membrane to hold it together.
