every now and then we remember that the sun's atmosphere is orders of magnitude hotter than its surface and no one knows why and that's frustrating to us

why is it like that

@pillowcat the photosphere (what is meant when people talk about the 'surface of the sun') is easily measured to be 5772 kelvin. the corona (the sun's 'atmosphere') is approximately five million kelvin. No one knows why.
