why do people still do the (xxx) xxx-xxxx phone number format anyway

it's not like the area code has any special meaning anymore

@trwnh we've always thought that xxx-xxx-xxxx is easier, but I guess that might differ for others

@trwnh @Felthry this and also if i'm getting a phone number from someone local i know the area code will be either 905 or 289 so having it separated out helps me parse those three digits as the one bit of information that it effectively is

@monorail @trwnh no one has landlines anymore though, in our experience

and your cell number is just "whatever area code you lived in years ago when you first got a cell phone"

...i guess outside of college towns that might be more reliably "here" though

@trwnh @monorail we've certainly never heard of that one before, but i can see it happening

@Felthry @trwnh apparently the reason drake says he's from the six is that the toronto area code is 416, which is really flimsy to me but then again i'm not drake

@Felthry Maybe because the formatting makes it extra clear that it's a phone number?

I suspect that not aa lot of people know what area codes are or that they're now meaningless as well. :P

@BatElite oh no i assure you a lot of people know what area codes are

@BatElite (wouldn't be surprised if people outside the us didn't though; it's a US-specific thing)

@Felthry

...do I still do that? I feel like I don't still do that.

If I did still do that, it'd be out of internalized "everything must be formatted correctly"-ness.

@packbat I don't know if you still do that, this was about a pizza delivery site

@Felthry oh, yeah, that's pretty common on, like, restaurant menus

I think that industry is less concerned with the latest trends in non-food-related technology on average

@Felthry half the menus in my kitchen for local restaurants have parentheses
