just made something about as ridiculously overspecced as I could on pcpartpicker just for the hell of it
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HXfR6R
now that i think about it i could have made it more ridiculous
that case has space for more hard drives, imagine six or seven 16 TB HDDs in RAID 10
definitely could have used a more ridiculous monitor too but... i want this one. 3440x1440 is a pleasing resolution
of course this machine is absolutely ridiculous and even our dream computer is way lower-spec than this
nothing, and i mean nothing, needs two-way SLI on RTX 2080 SUPERs. Nothing for a personal computer needs a TR 3990X or a 16 TB hard drive or 256 GB of RAM, though those would be reasonable on high-spec servers and stuff
@trwnh oh a 3950X would be a lot more reasonable for a high-performance personal machine
we probably wouldn't go beyond a 3700X personally, considering our 3600 is already performing quite well as it is
Went with the 2080s because I don't think the 5700XT is quite as ridiculous as two 2080s in SLI, hah
also its driver support is reportedly bad
@trwnh huh! maybe will consider it for the next upgrade, if they've fixed the driver issues it had at launch
that 2060 super is looking pretty good too though
though honestly we don't have the money for any of this stuff so it's not like it matters
@trwnh we really want to upgrade both our machines to 32GB of RAM and get a valve index and get an ultrawide monitor for the desktop and...
we have no money with which to do that
@trwnh we just have 16 on both computers and it's fine for what we use it for but trying to run heavily modded minecraft on the laptop (and running hte minecraft server on the desktop) eats up a lot of ram and gets worryingly close to the limit
why does money have to be a thing anyway, let's just all agree to stop doing this whole money thing
@trwnh unfortunately our laptop is 2x8 and only has two memory slots so we'll have to replace both of those
and what with how picky DDR is with its timing i can't imagine trying to use the old laptop ram in some sort of adapter to use as desktop ram would work
@trwnh problem is upgrading would cost too much, 32g is like $130 and we currently have a budget of, uh, $0 or thereabouts
@trwnh if only there were places where you could spend negative money
