let's take this tiny part from a hard-to-grow flower that each plant only produces one of and which is really difficult to harvest and separate mechanically from all the rest of the flower and then use it in large quantities as a spice and a dye

that sounds like a really good idea, doesn't it

@Felthry I mean originally it will have likely been a very local thing as both spice and dye but also medicinal. Then I assume it just got really popular via word of mouth.

Reading up about it I learned for a period of time *the UK* was growing some (and actually restarted growing it in 2013)

@DarkOverord when you say the UK was growing some, do you mean the actual government was funding a farm or just that someone in the UK was growing it?

@Felthry I assume the recent instance is private farm

But back in the 16th and 17th century where a town literally renamed itself I'm not sure!
