sometimes i ask people what their favorite of a thing is

other times i ask what their least favorite is

this time, fediverse, tell me about your most "eh, it's *fine*, I *guess*..." video games!

@Felthry Megaman 6. I'm a big fan of the series, but 6 is the worst (IMO) of the classic games. It just feels like a slog and the weapons are either bland, clumsy, or both. But it does a lot right; the graphics and music are top-tier and the Jet and Power adapters are fun to play with. And of course it has the one 'taur-shaped boss so far. It's just overall... fine.

@dodec We've noticed that most people seem to think 2 and 4 are the only good megaman games and all the rest are mediocre.

@Felthry

2 and 4? ... I'm not sure I agree with that. Not that either is bad (like I said, 6 is my least favorite of a series I at least kind of like all of). It's hard to recommend 1, true. 3 is a very solid game, though, and makes a very nice cap to the original trilogy. 5 is the best of the 4-6 series (the speedrun does a terrible job of representing how fun the game actually is). 7 just has so much care put into it, from the animations to the many interactions the weapons can cause, that I'm surprised people don't like it more. I genuinely like 8 and think it's one of the best MM titles, although the terrible voice acting is a weak spot. 9 and 10 were both generally pretty fun if not very ambitious. 11 had some great ideas but suffers from the designers only giving any thought to the 8 boss stages and apparently forgetting to make Wily Castle interesting (also most of the music suffers from using the same synth lead instrument that's a little unpleasant to listen to). Megaman and Bass was ambitious and underappreciated (the Ice Wall remains one of my favorite MM weapons, and MagicMan is still a great boss design).

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@dodec oh I'm thinking just out of the original six--most people seem to think 2 and 4 are the best for whatever reason. Those are the ones we see speedruns of the most, too.

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@Felthry

Out of the first 6, 5 is my favorite, but it's also my least favorite to watch speedruns of. It's not supposed to be all about Super Arrow abuse, that's just the fastest way to skip through it. Go play it for yourself and try it out.

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@dodec We've tried to get into megaman games a few times, but they're just too difficult i'm afraid :<

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@Felthry

They are, in general. 5 happens to be one of the easier ones, though, because it likes to throw E-tanks at you.

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@dodec perhaps we'll give it a try!

original megaman games are ridiculously expensive, but they've been ported a lot

re: cw: Megaman nerdery (long)

@Felthry
The Megaman Legacy Collection has 1-6 in it and is $15 on Steam, if you're looking for a cheap legal way to get them (and Legacy Collection 2 has 7-10).

@dodec yeah, we got the megaman X legacy collection on switch a while back

don't think we ever managed to beat a single boss of it, hah
