I wonder, has there been a study done on how long a music loop needs to be in a video game for players not to find it annoying? what factors affect it; can combat music be shorter than overworld music? does louder music need to be longer?

@Felthry that would be really interesting!

like, in our experience, it's really variable? there's definitely elements of composition that can make the same amount of material more or less compelling over the long term

videogame music is a super interesting compositional challenge

@Ratttz We've never liked when a game has music just for the menu; since it's the same throughout the entire game, and you go into the menu a lot when it's an RPG, it gets grating after a while. Just keeping the area background music is preferable, though it's good when they reduce the volume a bit.

Overworld music falls into this same trap sometimes, which is why it's nice when games change overworld music partway through; the Tales series tends to do this for instance.
