it's kind of weird that the vowel in the english -ed past tense ending is never pronounced, but can be pronounced when the meter of a poem or song demands it and it doesn't sound odd to native speakers.

also the difference between the words learned and learnèd which i think is the only case of a diacritical mark being used in a native english word

@Felthry oh, this makes us think of youtube.com/watch?v=qu4zyRqILY and vowels being reduced! That might be why that vowel disappears a lot - it's not an accented syllable and it can usually be reduced all the way to absent.
