also why the fuck is this apparently not a thing
tripping over power cords has been the cause of three of the four laptops we've had break on us breaking
and the other one had a third-party adapter that used an adapter that functioned as a breakaway
you'd think a breakaway plug would be the obvious thing to use here, so why do we not see more of them?
our current laptop even has a right-angle plug on it which makes it even more prone to such damage

Ah. I think I've stumbled across the problem. You can apparently blame apple for this tech not being everywhere, and why you only see really see it on apple devices, or things with very standardized and broad connectors (IE: phones with USB-C)
US Patent No. 7311526 is an incredibly broad patent on magnetic connections for power cables, and it appears any company would have to pay a licensing fee to apply in order to use something similar.
@Tryn how about non-magnetic breakaway connectors then, those aren't hard -F
