people are talking about some kind of thing with gamestop being shorted and this causing hedge funds to lose money that doesn't exist

can someone explain what these words mean to people who don't know capitalism words

@Felthry It's so recent it's still technically a story in progress. About all I know is that a hedge fund run by people with too goddamn much money got blindsided by the power of bored nerds on Reddit, and from what I understand it's going to be hilarious to watch what happens when any of those bored nerds try to cash out.

@Felthry To my understanding, a hedge fund is a place rich people keep money with the expectation that money will be reinvested to provide a return, or at least remain stable.

As far as how shorting as a concept applies here? Fuck if I know.
