i wonder why there doesn't seem to have ever been a modern replacement for the 555 timer

I figured it was a "fix what isn't broke" situation

@BatElite It's horribly inefficient, has really high power consumption

and it's very unstable over time, running it for long periods the frequency will drift by quite a lot

this also means you can't use it for long-period timers, it's not useful at low frequencies

it's also got a pretty low upper frequency limit, typically around 100 kHz
