why did the atari people choose the number 2600 anyway

@Felthry I can't find a clear answer that cites contemporary documentation. It does appear the Atari VCS (as it was called publicly until the 5200 was released) had an internal model number of CX2600 going back to 1977, though.

My suspicion is it's a reference to telephone phreaking, and the use of 2600 Hz tones to hack the phone system. But that's speculation.
