@nautilee @Austin_Dern i guess it's hard for us to comprehend just because we were born after all that was well and settled into "yes definitely wear a seatbelt" and airbags were just a thing that every car had that you never thought about until they maybe save your life someday

we knew airbags came later but assumed that was like, 40s or 50s or something not 70s or 80s or something

@Felthry @nautilee It's amazing to think, yeah. There was a very good sea change in public thinking in the 60s-70s, to realizing that safety could be designed into the cars rather than harangued into drivers.
(Also that if it weren't required by law, car makers wouldn't put it in on their own because not enough people would pay the extra money, however slight, for better safety.)
@Felthry @Austin_Dern for reference it took until 2017 for mississippi to implement an all passengers must wear seatbelts law.

Automotive safety was more of a suggestion in the 70s.

I don't *know* for sure but I bet the crank who ran Astounding/Analog Science Fiction Magazine probably wrote ten editorials a year denouncing Ralph Nader and Rachel Carson. And would've denounced Betty Friedan if he had heard of women's rights.

Ralph Nader is a political activist and consumer advocate famous for writing "Unsafe At Any Speed", a 1965 book criticizing the car industry.
Rachel Carson was a biologist who wrote "Silent Spring", a book that exposed the dangers of DDT.
Betty Friedan was a feminist and the co-founder of the National Organization for Women.

@Felthry There's *some* space for legitimate argument.
After all, one can always make a car (or whatever) *safer*, so one can ask why *this* standard is reasonable but a more safe one too uneconomical or a less safe one too irresponsible.
And there's a personal-autonomy argument. Who is the National Transportation Safety Board to declare my tolerance of risk on Route 17K is unreasoned? What do they know about my case?
But mostly it was crybabies who DON'T WANNA and YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.
@Austin_Dern cost wise i never really thought about it but airbags and seatbelts are both pretty simple things, I can't imagine they add that much to the cost of a car in comparison to all the other things that make a car expensive -F
@Felthry You'd think, but often the constraints, in budget, space, weight, and manufacturing line processes are complicated.
Also there was for a while the idea that if a car touted its safety features, it meant the car was unsafe. Which sounds daft until you remember how often an ad is just a lie.
If someone spends a lot of money to tell you Product is Very Good at Thing, how often is that because Product is actually only okay, or even bad, but it's cheaper to buy ads than to fix it?
