what exactly does "schedule" mean in "schedule 40 pipe", or "schedule 2 controlled substance"
-F

@Felthry A "schedule" in this context is just a list of stuff that's part of a law or standard.

@Felthry@awoo.space In the second case it's a fancy/archaic way of saying "official list." The first case apparently refers to the thickness of the pipe wall but I have no idea why the word schedule is used unless maybe it's not directly referring to the thickness but to a list of standardized thicknesses?

@Felthry@awoo.space Interesting discovery, as a non-medical professional I'd got it in my head the drug schedule had three levels: 1 "No beneficial uses, illegal for any purpose without dea approval", 2 "Beneficial uses but dangerous enough to require a prescription," to, 3 "Safe enough not to require a prescription." But apparently it's a 1 to 5 scale

@LilFluff schedule 40 isn't a specific thickness, it's a different standard thickness for each standard pipe size; there's also schedule 80 and 120 and i think 20 and 10
