even as a half-decent metroid player, some of the shinespark puzzles in dread have us just staring at the screen, thinking varyingly either "how on earth are you supposed to do *that*" or just plain "what the *fuck*"
-F

@socks I mean we're not particularly good at shinespark puzzles in general but some of these are just "how the actual fuck"
-F

@Felthry I think there's some shinespark mechanic I just don't understand yet because a couple are straight up impossible with the stuff I know

@socks what stuff do you know? There's not anything that gets added to shinesparks later but there are some mechanics that are a little hard to figure out and aren't explained -F

Metroid Dread

@Felthry All I know is 1. you can only seem to do it from the ground, unlike Zero Mission where you could do it from a spin jump, 2. you can do it from morph ball mode, and 3. you can refresh it by running up a slope

That's it

shinespark mechanics re: Metroid Dread

@socks from one of the puzzles I've come across it looks like it has to be possible to do it off of a cling wall, but I've not been able to get it yet (the part with the cling wall is itself really difficult to get to so we haven't tried many times)

one other thing is it *is* possible if you're fast on the inputs to maintain a speed boost through a wall jump, which redirects it in the opposite direction (not a shinespark obviously but you frequently need to get your speed boost state far enough along so the shinespark can be stored long enough)

also, it *is* possible to do a shinespark in midair, but you have to not be in the spin jump state; you can exit that state by firing a shot or pressing ZR to go into morph ball. or you can just fall off a ledge instead of jumping, if the puzzle gives you a ledge to fall off

shinespark mechanics re: Metroid Dread

@Felthry OH. Yes, okay, that stuff isn't very well explained at all, especially maintaining a speed boost. Thank you

re: shinespark mechanics re: Metroid Dread

@socks you're welcome! to be honest i'm not sure if maintaining a boost through a wall jump is even intentional or if it's a glitch, we've not encountered a puzzle yet that needs it (we've hardly done them all though) and the timing is kind of hard

re: shinespark mechanics re: Metroid Dread

@Felthry I just did a puzzle that required it, so definitely intentional

@socks ah okay!
