finished dread earlier
my feelings on it are complex, it’s a good game, but it never fully clicked with me like it seemed to with other people; an experience of frustration, taking a break and coming back later rather than blasting through in one session; a massive sense of relief from finishing and being done rather than item hunting or hard mode

i have no reason to even try for 100% when i know my hands cannot do complex shinespark manoeuvres
but even without that, the SA-X’s “tense but can’t actually hurt you unless you really mess something up” worked a lot better for me than having to retry most EMMI segments repeatedly
(i do avoid souls-likes because i don’t want the frustration that comes with them either, which i’m suspecting might be part of the attitude difference)

yeah we had similar issues and are *extremely* annoyed they locked 100% behind double shinesparks and places that require either frame perfect shinespark storing or ridiculous walljump chains. it's too up its own ass about being a speedrunner game that it forgets to be casual-friendly.

@nautilee it already annoyed me early on with the reliance on mandatory hidden blocks, had to turn to a walkthrough early on a good few times from missing them
optional hidden blocks fine, but don’t make them mandatory unless you give the ability to find them much earlier than it actually is in dread
re: metroid dread (+birdsite link)
@nautilee @Dex iwrc it was super early in Samus Returns and people complained about it removing any fun with discovery, which I honestly agree with as shooting everything and trying to hunt down hidden blocks is one of the things we like about Metroid games, but I can definitely understand the other opinion
I don't really know how to reconcile these two playstyles
