NFTs

I'm glad that I've (for the most part) stopped seeing NFTs referred to as "Cryptoart."

The actual art tied to the NFTs doesn't seem to be the point, has nothing to do with cryptocurrency on its own, and is just a vessel for a fancy blockchain receipt that people use for speculative investing. Yet people were acting like it was a whole new genre of art at first.

NFTs aren't art. They're a proof of ownership of art. And referring to them as art bugs me. I'm not gonna say art can't be commercial, because it can. But I will say that proof of purchase of art is not art.

@ziphi Now I'm wondering if anyone's ever hung up a receipt in an art gallery and called it art

i feel like there are things you could say with that, actually

@Felthry That thought occurred to me as I was writing this.

Presentation in an art gallery would change the way we perceive the receipt in a really fundamental way that would make it be art.

I'd be curious about how people would respond to and interpret that.
