for some reason, when we were a kid, there was a rumor that nintendo was going to follow up the gamecube with some kind of thing called the gamesphere

It was a gag on an old show--I think Drake & Josh, but I actually don't know for sure--that the main characters got a console called an Okami GameSphere, but they couldn't play it because it got wrapped up in a conspiracy.
Actually, now that I think about it, it could also have been South Park.
But either way, the name was "taken," but it was probably also why it became a popular urban myth.
i don't know if this was some kind of local thing to us or if it was a widespread thing that the ubiquitous uncle who worked at nintendo told everyone
