@NumberOneBug@yiff.life i think our favorite story of the romans being really terrible at conquering things is probably Julius Caesar's first attempt to invade britain
just, having a horrible time of it with boats (turns out the english channel is much rougher waters than the mediterranean, and the romans weren't exactly outstanding seafarers in the mediterranean), probably taking days just to cross the english channel, they get to land and then suddenly, white cliffs of dover

(and then they were pretty thoroughly beaten back by the locals and forced to cross the channel *again*, then go around rounding up the soldiers who'd been blown off course in the initial crossing and said "fuck it, i'm not doing that again" and just set up shop in some town along the coast)
