hyrule warriors musings
it's really weird to return to hyrule warriors 1 after playing Age of Calamity a lot recently. they're so fundamentally differently designed despite being the same series. they're both good games (especially the definitive re-re-release of the former) but calamity improved so much on the formula that by comparison hw1 just... oof. sucks to play somewhat.
re: hyrule warriors musings
@zaradragon the thing we disliked the most about playing the original after age of calamity was how all the outposts felt Really Obvious and incongruous with the rest of the level, all these perfectly square rooms
where age of clam has them as just designated areas of the map, whatever shape they might be, and they frequently have lots of like, boxes and training dummies and watchtowers and stuff that an actual military outpost might have

@Felthry oh yeah that's absolutely a massive improvement, allows battles to feel more... connected to a place. Defenses setup in what little narrow alleys they can hold throughout a city, storerooms garrisoned to prevent the supplies going missing, etc etc.
also the combat just, *feels* better. Attacks feel more weighty and impactful, non-grunt enemies aren't sent flying by every attack, dodges feel better (and the payoff of a flurry rush makes them more worthwhile)
re: hyrule warriors musings
@zaradragon also age of calamity has a story that's not an excuse plot, too, which is nice

@zaradragon fair enough! we just like games having good story with a lot of work put into it
