Phone battery question

At a mutual's recommendation, I installed an app that tracks phone battery usage and health, as mine seems to be failing.

One of the things it does is set off a notification when the battery reaches 80% charge. It claims that charging to 100% reduces battery life.

Is that actually true? On the one hand, I can't afford a new phone right now, so I wanna keep this one limping along as far as possible. On the other hand, I kinda want to squeeze as much out of it as possible.

@Qwyrdo Speaking as an electrical engineer who's done some (limited, non-publishable) research on lithium-ion battery aging... It's Complicated™ but generally yes, not charging all the way to whatever your device calls 100% would improve the battery's longevity. It may also help to never discharge below a certain amount too, but I'm less sure of that.
