covid
why the fuck do some people just. not wear masks? or take them off? while it's literally illegal to do so in a public place right now?
this is a serious question i really would like to understand why people do that because it just feels so baffling to me

re: covid
@LexYeen could you elaborate? i am really stressed out about people not wearing masks and i feel like understanding reasoning, evne if faulty, might help

re: covid
@Felthry Generational social pressure that blames individuals for social problems can lead to a genuine belief in that false assumption, and a belief that one's individual rights supercede all else.
covid
@Felthry lots of reasons
they genuinely don't understand the risks (a lot of people downplaying this as "no worse than the flu")
they don't understand the risks *to other people* (our society encourages people to only care about themselves)
they understand the risks, the risks to other people, or both, and just do not care
"how dare i be forced to wear something that inconveniences me in the slightest"
covid
@Felthry often, responding to a present and immediate experience ("this mask is annoying and uncomfortable") takes priority over a vague and nebulous future risk ("I might maybe get covid and can't envision it being truly awful").
As it applies to masks specifically, mask-wearing having been turned into a bullshit culture war issue definitely doesn't help. However, the same fundamental pattern of responding more to immediate conditions is common in a lot of human psychology.
re: covid
@starkatt I guess to us there's an additional immediate experience of "people not wearing a mask is stressful"

@Felthry toxic individualism, IMO.
