Oregon DOT/mountain driving musing, longish

Researching the route I need to drive in a few days, there's a stretch of interstate at the CA/OR border that weaves through mountains. It's the worst stretch of road on the interstate and sometimes just closes entirely due to snow.

There's a secondary road that runs parallel to it that is permanently flagged with hazards in the ODOT road advisory system with a giant all caps warning saying "THIS IS NOT A BYPASS IF I-5 IS CLOSED. THIS IS A TREACHEROUS, WINDING GRAVEL ROAD THAT DOES NOT RECEIVE MAINTENANCE"

That's there for a reason and it makes vee frown a bit.

@trysdyn I take it you decided against using the amtrak route?

@Felthry Yeah it'll be March by the time I go, it'll be fine. I'll also need a car up there and flexibility on when I return, so this is the best option.
