"correct" english

my indian flatmates stay stuff like "too much of water" instead of "too much water"

as a brit i say the latter

68 000 000 people in the uk
1 400 000 000 people live in india

language is a tool of communication with arbitrary and changing guidelines that people disregard anyway

picking them up on the difference in language use would be a dick move, and foolish anyway considering how much more english with indian characteristics is spoken

i am satisfied with my status as a minority edge-case within the english-speaking world, and embrace the peculiarities of my language use even though they're different to the majority of speakers

re: "correct" english

@puf it took us a long time to get here and we still trip up sometimes but we're mostly to the point that we've unlearned most of the prescriptive nonsense they teach in elementary school, and have replaced "that's wrong" with "oh that's a neat feature of this other variety of english"

and i think that's a much nicer place to be
