i am curious, does anyone with some knowledge of linguistics know why it is that people with certain accents tend to put an epenthetic /s/ in the middle of the word "subtract", turning it into "substract"?
We've even seen this is writing

@packbat actually if you read the etymology it may be older, it cites a modern latin variation "substrahere" of the standard "subtrahere"

@Felthry that's what I meant - "subtrahere" is the older version, but folks have been adding an "s" in there for hundreds of years

@packbat yeah what I was saying is it's probably even older than 1540s because if "substrahere" was a known variation in latin before "substract" showed up in english it must have been older
