So, I've been slowly following folks on Mastodon. The interplay between different instances is interesting.

In particular, I keep getting tremendously unhelpful errors that are like, "Sorry! An error occured." and I have no idea what to do.

Particularly happens when either trying to follow someone or reply to a toot. Haven't had it not happen once yet, where it does, but it doesn't happen everywhere.

What do I do?

I've also been finding Mastodons belonging to people I know, but they were abandonned years ago. I wonder why? I guess I could ask them, elsewhere? I hadn't thought of that until just now. There's a lot of them, though! Was there a "Get off Mastodon!" scare a few years ago, or something? Did Mastodon just not 'catch on', maybe?

And, finally, how do I send a direct message from the web client?

I sent one by phone earlier tonight, to someone I knew who asked for a DM before doing a follow. There's another one who asked the same thing, but I'm on web on my chromebook now, but I don't see a DM option. Also no "send a dm" option on the DM page.

Incidentally, is the web client how things are meant to be done? Should I be using something else? Is there a third party web client? What's out there?

@relee The web client is how we do it. There's also several phone clients (don't use the "official" one it's really bad) but we don't know much about them.
