we never saw dragon ball z as a kid, i wonder if it would be vaguely entertaining to watch now

@Felthry As far as I understand, Dragon Ball started by riffing on Journey to the West. Eventually he started doing his own thing. During Dragon Ball Z, there was a lot of interference from Toriyama's editor, who would insist this or that wasn't good enough, and Toriyama changed it or made it just part of something else. Particularly for the Cell Saga, it was like that. That's why they keep introducing new bad guys.
@relee Journey to the West gets a lot of "remakes". You don't see that very often with Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Water Margin (in the latter case, the game series Suikoden is the only thing we can think of that's based on it)

@relee and we can't even remember what the fourth one was, something about a red room? but we've never seen anything based on that

@Felthry I've seen a few remakes of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and not just the games. The most 'interesting' one I've seen was an anime where they turned all of the characters into lesbians. It's called Koihime Mousou and it's way better than I made it sound just now.
we had a video game of it as a kid, which is what the previous post was about, but we definitely didn't get the whole story from that
but also dragon ball z feels very much like a "making it up as they go" sort of story--i understand it originated from toriyama telling his kids bedtime stories or something along those lines
