*every* time we want to check out a new twitch streamer, *every* time, they have that setting on that means we have to give twitch our phone number before we're allowed to say anything

@Felthry Unfortunately this is more Twitch's fault than anything. There was a period of time... a long period... where someone built a bot farm that'd flood a streamer's chat with really awful shit, then report the streamer for not modding well enough.

This went on for MONTHS with no action from Twitch. Their eventual solution was a toggle to require SMS verification of your account before you can talk. The UI to control the setting is awful and Twitch pops up this giant warning that your settings are "not safe" if you have it off.

@trysdyn there needs to be a better solution to this

why haven't we seen it from any of the people we've been watching for a while?
-F

@trysdyn like is this a new thing that only started in the last couple weeks or something because this has only been happening for a few weeks but it's *every* stream other than ones we were already watching before this started
-F

@trysdyn i'm mostly just frustrated because this is making things difficult for us as part of a bad solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, that only exists because some people are just awful people, and that this is the solution they give feels like they're using it as an excuse to farm more data and it's just, ugh

everything about it is bad
-F

@Felthry That's exactly how I felt when they announced it, too. :/

@trysdyn i have to wonder how much it even helps the problem
-F

@Felthry Well around the time they rolled this out the initial raid problem stopped. They also claim they applied some kind of machine learning to account creations to detect bot waves but... idk.

Twitch gonna Twitch.

@trysdyn "machine learning" aka "we can't be held liable if it doesn't work"
