why do snes roms generally use the file extension .smc
most of the time it's something more obvious like .nes for nes or .gb for gameboy, so why isn't it .sfc? i get why it wouldn't be .snes, because the early days of snes emulators there would still be lots of systems out there that didn't like more than three characters in file extensions but .sfc fits fine

It had to; that's what it was for back in the day. You could dump a ROM into a file on the floppy (or multiple floppies if it didn't fit on one), do whatever you wanted to the data you extracted (like uploading it to a BBS), and then other people could download these ROM dumps onto their own floppies and play them in their own Super Magicoms (or equivalent for other consoles).
