Oh wow, Wikipedia's article about the Commodore Datasette has a recording of what it sounds like if you play one of the data cassettes through audio. An 18-second segment, too, representing easily almost two bytes of recorded data! (Tape drive did *not* have a fast data scheme.)
@Austin_Dern why *was* it so slow, anyway? you could easily get much faster data transmission off a tape drive in the 80s
