@unperson Tuning in string instruments is usually just as well! Usually, you tune the lowest string (C for the viola, which we play) with a reference, like a tuner or a note played by someone else in the ensemble who you're going to use as your reference, then tune each subsequent string to be a 5th above the one before it

Using someone else as a reference means that string ensembles don't always tune to the same tuning on different days--all that matters, after all, is that they're in tune with each other. they'd do it differently for studio recordings or things, of course
