"Teenage thief allegedly steals and eats ‘world’s hottest’ gummy bear, immediately suffers consequences"

Go look up that headline. It's a hoot.

I'm only laughing because the store isn't pressing charges.

Considering the gummy bear in question is reportedly 9 million on the scoville scale, I think that's entirely fair on the store's part.

@LexYeen There is nothing the judicial system could do that would be worse than the punishment they've already brought upon themself

@Felthry Right? Like, okay, I know it's bad form to laugh at someone else's pain? But like... When you fuck around and find out on that short of a timetable, what else am I supposed to do? :furry_trash:

@LexYeen There's also the fact that it's not actual harm, capsaicin *hurts* but it doesn't actually hurt you, if that makes sense? like sure that kid had an unpleasant experience but they'll be fine

@LexYeen (note that there's a difference here between an unpleasant experience and a traumatic one--it's entirely possible to be completely physically unharmed but still have a traumatic experience. but i would be very surprised if eating an incredibly spicy gummy bear would be traumatic)

@Felthry Yup, it's "just" a chemical that activates the same nerve pathways used by the body to detect heat!
