It's getting hard to deny that I need a new mattress, but it's intimidating to try buying one since I have no idea how to tell if something would be good to sleep on without trying to sleep on it. And with how expensive they are I don't want to make the wrong decision.

@NovaSquirrel Mattress stores usually have beds set up that you can lay down on a mattress (they spray sanitizer on it after) and see how it feels. not always for every mattress they offer, but a lot of them

@NovaSquirrel actually one time when we needed a mattress, we asked about one and they offered to have it on a bed to try if we came back the next day iwrc (we didn't, because they also said "this one is very close to the same" and we tried that one instead)

@Felthry I did try going to a mattress store and laying down on some of them, but nothing really stood out as being the obvious answer and everything was pretty similar.

Though, maybe that's a hint that it doesn't matter that much as long as it's not uncomfortable.

@NovaSquirrel it kinda doesn't, yeah

the one thing i'll say is that you should avoid foam mattresses if you sit on the bed a lot (rather than just sleeping on it)

@Felthry Oh that'd be pretty important for me, yeah. I don't have space in my room for a couch or chair or anything so my bed gets used for most things.

@NovaSquirrel yeah, just don't get a memory foam (or other foam) mattress then. it'll "memorize" the shape of you sitting on it and end up less comfortable to sleep on

@Felthry Well that narrows down the similar-seeming options pretty well then, thanks! I was considering foam initially.

This is exactly what I'm talking about though, I wouldn't have known about that from just laying on it for a moment at a store.
