Having trouble figuring this out but I'm genuinely curious what happens to "offerings to the gods/god" in different cultures. Like if you leave food at a shrine in Japan is it left to rot or does someone come and take it eventually? Do people eat it? Is it thrown away?

@oceanotter I believe it's common in at least some cultures for it to either be distributed among the shrine's tenders, or given to the poor

burnt offerings are a different matter, of course--they're not really in usable condition after burning, though the ashes might be usable as fertilizer
