Astronomers are bad at naming things.
The Very Large Telescope.
The Multiple Mirror Telescope.
The Large Binocular Telescope.
The Thirty Meter Telescope.
The Extremely Large Telescope.
All of these are real names of real telescopes, either currently in existence or planned for construction.
@Felthry *hyperventilates*
Overwhelmingly Large?
Oh, my.
@kellerfuchs The (utterly ridiculous) plan is to have it be something like a single-reflector 45m diameter telescope
@Felthry Is the Thirty Meter Telescope a newtonian telescope?
If it is, instead of the "TMT"...
@VoxSomniator Not entirely sure what a newtonian telescope is relative to other types. The TMT is still in planning though; it was going to be built on Mauna Kea iirc and construction halted due to protests over the mountain being sacred to the native Hawaiian culture. They're going to put it in Spain now I think?
I think there's also an Overwhelmingly Large Telescope planned
