A thought. Did console video games always have the standard release price of $60 or equivalent? (accounting for inflation of course) Or has that price changed over time? Surely you wouldn't have had to pay $60 (2018 dollars) for Breakout, would you?
@jaymeskeller How has inflation been in that period, though? In terms of purchasing power, the cost may have remained more or less constant.
@Felthry Hmm..I can't say for certain. I ran a check on the inflation calculator, and it seems like 2.7% a year from around 1995 to 2016.
@jaymeskeller Doing the math (if I'm doing it right) suggests that £20 in 1995 currency would be a bit more than £25 in 2016 currency, so that would imply they've approximately doubled in real price.
@Felthry digging around, i found that videogames actually cost LESS if you adjust for inflation. Multiple sites report that NES game in the late 80s cost 40-50 bucks, equivalent to more than twice as much nowadays. The first LOZ was about $49.99 in 1986, which would be $111.80 in 2017 USD.
@Felthry That price, I think, at least in the UK, has gone up over time. Megadrive/Genesis games were around £20 at the time (90's, no idea if mid or late), but now, the cost of a game is around the £50 mark.
