A lot of groups have all the players make a character by themselves, before meeting.

Don't do this*. It's way easier to make characters that fit together if you make them together.

this actually caused a problem with a game I was going to run: I set up a group chat, organised some details, went to bed.

The next day, I checked the chat and overnight several of them had made their characters already.

@lizardsquid Have you ever seen the way the Fate system does character creation? @Terrana@tootplanet.space could tell you more, but it explicitly requires player characters to show up in each other's backstories.

Apocalypse World and Dungeon World do the same thing, and it's really great for making characters that actually fit together
