Re:Yesterday's Fediverse Dustup involving racists attacking PlayVicious
So, after sleeping on it, I think the best takeaway from this is that, calling someone out directly for missteps is important, but it has to come from a place of wanting progress. We're all products of an oppressive society, sometimes we carry some of their spores unintentionally, and sometimes even fleas from the ways it has abused us and beaten us down.
I think it was good that Are0h was called out for accidentally misgendering, it's important that we all understand the importance of mindfullness among trans people so that we don't accidentally trample on the toes of our more vulnerable.
It is also good that he has taken responsibility and acknowledged that he messed up, as well as pledged to do better. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but I have known him long enough that I have faith in him. And it is important to be magnanimous about it when people take responsibility and try to do better.
What you shouldn't do, is do exactly what the folks attacking him and Playvicious are doing, using racial slurs, and spreading lashon hara, and trying to black-jacket him for his missteps. I am all for holding people's feet to the fire for their mistakes until they acknowledge it and take responsibility.
However, I will condemn you for repeating the same actions that Pyretta and co have done, because what they did also hurts other racial minorities, people who are socially vulnerable and their own cause. And this helps nobody.
