People need to stop acting like Mastodon/Fedi is a single platform that can get taken over by one group. It’s thousands of twitter-esque websites all with their own rules, subcultures, and communities that can communicate with eachother or block communication with eachother as it suits their needs.
One instance might be a bunch of “shitposter” asshole tech bros. Another might be a bunch of super leftist chill as hell queer furries with next no drama due to being a small, invite-only group.
Joining the Fediverse means un-learning behaviors and assumptions that Twitter and Facebook instill in people. You need to find one or more instances that fit your needs, and you need to utilize the extensive tools to curate your own experience by blocking/muting people, entire instances, and terms/phrases.
You have to take responsibility for your own experience. Moderators and admins are there to deal with major issues that can’t be resolved with a simple user block.
I see a lot of people on twitter be all like “ugh, masto is gentrified by a bunch of white tech bros” and it’s like...yeah that sucks. So why didn’t you leave that instance and go find a better one for you? Why did you join Masto without understanding anything about it? Why did you join the first instance you saw and then think that was all there was?
