one minute into the decentraland documentary and the virtual cinema is incredible
like i’m sure i could find vrchat cinemas with a JPEG of a concession stand instead of an actual concession stand… but even the most basic of those will at least have *seats* in the cinema

holy shit
i spent a very brief period in second life back somewhere in the late 2000s (i mean very brief, possibly one session and done)
how did it run better and have a better framerate than this
i mean i'm watching the video at 2x and the stutters are still noticeable
and this with officially dropping VR support??

“here is an example of a game made with decentraland’s tools, still promoted on their website”
it’s a racing game that makes big rigs look competent
meanwhile, if i did not have qualms about products using crypto, i saw someone post yesterday about a recreation of beat saber in NEOS that can be taken to any world, which is something i see as cool as shit
why are even the cryptobros here
(beyond being virtual landlords, of course)
social ~~vr~~, the decentraland documentary
run around a line in a tiny mall to collect virtual coins to cash them in for virtual clothing, with most participants being idle bots
meanwhile i can load up afterdark plaza in vrchat, and at least (pizza!) take photos (pizza!) of me grinding (pizza!) a rail and looking cool (pizza!) while listening (pizza!) to the sweet sound (pizza!) effects from yo! noid 2 for meaningless tokens that also do nothing
social ~~vr~~, the decentraland documentary
thinking about this a few hours on
about how jumping is the only fundamental guaranteed unit of interaction and how it was only added because they happened to switch over to unity
about how the only way to sit down is to buy a community created emote
about how the "music festival" was a short introduction video by a celebrity that doesn't care followed by the regular music video you can watch in 2D
about how no one even cared to document it

like, friends have had a lot of valid criticisms of VRC since the EAC update
but it's not even the same ballpark
a stream of less than 10 viewers of someone playing pretend news reporter (that has received $250,000 in monopoly money to do so)
vs. someone doing what they love and their DJ sets filling nightclubs (even if for some reason those won't load in the UK)
the tools are piggybacking off unity, but flexible enough
vs. near non-existent
social ~~vr~~, the decentraland documentary, vrchat
the community is of course what makes VRC; it's all these people that have put their passions on display
vs. the only passion seeming to be for getting rich of the future of being a virtual landlord for a plot no one wants, and possibly skirting your local areas gambling laws
social ~~vr~~, the decentraland documentary, meta's verse
for all the criticism of facebook's horizon worlds, every article where the journalist visited the comedy club - i think they all found someone at least willing to try getting up there
vs. a comedy club having to fucking advertise that they have chatgpt writing jokes with text to speech
the entire platform could die tomorrow and what would be mourned apart from the tokens that couldn't be cashed out

@Dex Because if there's inherently nothing separating a creator from a bot (and there is, both psychologically and as a matter of process), it means they can throw money at the problem of being creative. And that helps them feel better about not finding their own spark or devoting any creative energy in their lives.
And I can see why they'd want to try using money to paper over that yawning void where their soul should be.
