linux migration post-Windows-10
Update: got VR working, haptics working, and face tracking almost working over the weekend.
I did need to kernel patch (which just worked, the first try!!) and spent some time with docs for unsupported VR hardware (the big screen beyond and project babble have bad tracking support on Linux, both are C-sharp executables in a trenchcoat), but man, this is so much easier than the days of manually patching configurations everywhere or suffering, especially between GCC versions.

Decided to make the switch to Garuda instead of sticking it out on Windows 10 ESU or migrating to 11. This isn't my first time (I did the same to skip Vista way back), so I already have a general idea of what to expect!
That said, I've been very impressed how much things just work now. Proton existing as a de-facto Wine replacement makes so many things so much better. Wayland is much nicer than X11 ever was to me. Packages that include default installations for Steam, Discord, and Telegram are much nicer than having to manually enable proprietary packages then practically EULA away my soul on installing basics to my system.
The various flavors I've deployed to other machines here at the house (small servers and commodity boxes, roughly in Debian and Arch now in equal measure) also generally Just Work. This is so much better than writing awkward configuration files that were a scant prayer-riding-on-a-live-cd or shuffling through package dependency hell to keep my systems stable.
I have already run into limitations with the desktop setup (I need to kernel patch to get the Big Screen Beyond working, which thankfully I know how to do), but those have been few and far between.
I was prepared for pain and suffering to skip this cycle of Windows, so I'm... kinda shocked it all just works without a hitch? What the heck.
Hey ✨Plush✨ City!
We have a bunch of new emojos! Presenting: Yingmoji!
Pretty sure we have at least one yinglet running around town
Thanks @mynotaurus for the awesome work!
Targindel, or just "Gin" for short, is the fourth character for my dragon-themed visual novel project. He is a cheerful guy, who loves reading and tinkering with stuff.
Gin made that prosthetic leg himself. Not like they mass produce them for that size, you know?

And when they're out, when this is nothing more than a bad memory, let's keep Nazis in their place. On the discarded boot of history that they so loved.

The US admin is full of actual Nazis, who want to turn this world to shit because they cannot imagine anything other than domination and control.
And they deserve nothing more than what the last batch did, twhat the Confederacy did, what any bully in a high school deserves: a bloody nose, a visceral reminder that their behavior will never be tolerated, and threefold the pain they would inflict on others.
Anyway. This batch is a bunch of fools, and we'll see them fall. Keep your chin up.

This is why you punch Nazis. This is why you deplatform them. And I won't say anything about the dead fascist they're using as a convenient martyr -- I have no kindness nor polite words at all for them.
At the end of the day, all they understand is power. And being beaten to the mat, so they never try that harm again.
The Nazis in power deserve what the last batch of Nazis got: defeat. And their day in court for being Nazis, in which "just following orders" was not a defense.

They also learned that no company under the sun will stop them. GamerGate showed that when companies were faced with the mildest of flame war, they folded and chose to offer sacrifices to appease the mob.
Now they're doing that with trans people. And boy howdy, that mob is never going to be satisfied -- they just might move to another target for awhile, but they'll be back.
The answer is to fight the mob: close the doors, shut the windows, and the protect people they so eagerly want sacrificed.

This was always about a white nationalist movement trying to obtain and retain power, backed by rich plutocrats who believe in it.
What's different is how they learned, through movements like GamerGate, that you can dress up fascism and bullying in polite language.
It was never about "ethics in game journalism". It was never about debate. It was never about speech.
It was about full-throated control, building support for hate, and destroying perceived enemies every step of the way.

This week feels especially bleak in the US, because the fucks in power are just going for it. They have their token scapegoat, and it not being the perfect one they want is beside the point. They're crafting it into what they want in real time via control over the media.
I think that strong-armed crackdowns on speech will fail. If I didn't, I would not be writing here.
And for folks just now showing up, some words for what's going on.

Writing here instead of other places because I don't want this to be an observation that "goes viral". I don't want that exposure, and I don't want to be the voice people expect to turn to for any of this.
But I do want to say a few things, so if you get anything out of it, please share it in ways that don't link back here, or feel free to steal credit even.
Anyway.🧵:
