Autism has no physiological component and no specific, pinned-down genetic component. When someone goes to a doctor to get diagnosed as autistic, there is no test that they run to receive a binary yes/no result
"Autism" is simply a name we've given to a list of traits that tend to be comorbid - what that means is that having autistic traits *is* being autistic. There is no deeper truth, that's simply all the term refers to
So if someone determines that they're autistic based on identifying with autistic traits, assuming they know their own life and have put good thought into it (and you should *always* assume that), that is exactly as legitimate as a professional diagnosis. Because that's exactly what a doctor would be doing to diagnose it!
This applies to many if not most neurotypes and mental illnesses, but I try not to speak on things I don't have experience with. In general though, fucking trust self-dx, ok? Don't be a gatekeeper
