One of these days I'll have the time to get a smart home fully set up that doesn't require the use of wifi for the majority of its functions. Sure I won't be able to use voice commands or control the house from anywhere in the world, but it sure would be nice to pull up my tablet and set things without having to leave the bed :P (Also setting up automation of certain things like lights and control of various devices based on specific circumstances)

@Kilroy i've homeassistant setup on an rpi connected to my network via ethernet

@toydragon Definitely something I need to get done, especially since I can hook up an array of sensors to the pi! I'll need to get a router to handle any smart home network traffic though that can be isolated from the internet except for periodic updates.

@Kilroy it has various VPNs available to help mke things more secure.

it's also warned me about devices on my LAN that were vulnerable so i could update them

like the philips hue hub that had a large vuln that philips didn't bother warning me about and i had to manually check it for updates in the app

@Kilroy but homeassistant noticed the vulnerable device and was warning me within seconds of connecting it to my network
