Thoughts on federation

Is it ethical to create a “walled garden” Mastodon instance, where no other instances federate in or out? Set aside whether it’s a good or intended use of the technology. Is it ethical?

Take such a walled garden and let the admin say: “I know of another instance I trust completely. I will open federation only to that instance.” Is that ethical?

@noelle Groups of people are free to use computers to communicate among themselves as they please. They may do it individually by hosting their own Mastodon instances and communicate via federation, or they may delegate this task to a person they trust to run an instance for all of them. The actions taken by Mastodon administrators are a matter for admins and users to settle, and different groups will rightly come to different conclusions for themselves.
