I probably would have a less conflicted view of current corporate politics if I hadn’t been personally threatened with violence by one of the people repeatedly held up as someone who got fired for “advocating diversity”. pretty damn hard for me to feel like they were unfairly terminated after that but if I talk about it the problem is clearly me and I should be the one fired instead.

My political positions:
It is completely unacceptable to perform or promote violence, harassment, doxxing, or attempting to harm people because of who they are. Defensive actions are justified to the extent that they are necessary to prevent harm and no more.
The justice system of the United States has a few good ideas and a lot of terrible implementation.
Markets solve free resource allocation problems well and work increasingly poorly when “nothing” is not a competitor.

@vahnj Each leader has two personality traits. One is never random, the other (the “hidden agenda”) is randomly picked from a generic pool but the pick may be weighted. (Gandhi is always the Peacekeeper, but he is only almost always Nuke Happy. Spain is always violently obsessed with their own religion, but it is random that they prefer civs with a large military.)

@vahnj Spain is specifically programmed to always try to found a religion and always get violent at anyone who doesn’t follow it - even if you haven’t had a chance to get proselytized yet. Civ6 Spain is at constant war basically

Colleagues I more agree with than don’t have attempted to deal with an appalling, escalating wave of destructive political behavior at work by making the situation ludicrously worse. I can shout from the rooftops why they’re undermining themselves and empowering people with really unpleasant views by their own behavior but I am absolutely certain I would be called an alt-right Nazi for expressing that I think they made an error, and then they’d try to kick me out of the company
I get nostalgic for various handheld games I haven’t played for years (my bucket o’ PSP discs most frequently), pull out the console, get it charged, and then don’t get around to playing anything on it
of course computer programming is hard. you have to imagine a machine made entirely out of math, then whisper it to a machine of rock and lightning.
Having had a good experience with the company that installed my air conditioner over the summer, let’s hope that replacing my water heater on short notice goes just as well?

Stuff that @indi is working in makes me realize that I am gender-specific in my sexual attraction and I feel awkward about this. not just because judging other people’s gender performances feels not okay, but because there’s no direct mapping from gender identity to the thing I’m into. I know both trans and cis people of various genders who “have” it and more who don’t.
It feels gender-y and it’s tagged gender-y in my mind but it’s not an Earth gender? I dunno

Design Thinking about sexuality in communities
@indi I want to be playfully and enthusiastically sexual, but my conservative cultural background and social anxiety have meant that so far, it has taken me a minimum of a year of knowing someone closely (it used to be, like, five years) to make or respond to an IRL sexual advance regarding a person.
This behavior doesn’t meet my ideals but I can’t just not have major anxieties and hang-ups just because I don’t want them.
Today involved a lot of waiting for slow tests after making small patches.
In related news, I have nearly won my game of Civ 6 for the iPad, in which the modern Greeks now have Ludwig von Beethoven live on Broadway in 1850 or so.

Project for the weekend: a tutorial on how to identify websites making false scientific claims (in this case, presenting themselves as a company vaguely seeking investors). There’s so much stuff wrong with this one site that whittling the analysis down to something people will read and share will be tough. It’s a chance to play with some kind of “online presentation” platform though, I’ve wanted an excuse. (Picking a platform is one step in this process. Maybe it will just be a website.)
