PS Classic

Here's a quick comparison of the PS Classic lineup for Japan and for the rest of the world. Will follow up with what I consider the clearest omissions.

re: PS Classic

An accessible version of this list can be found at this link: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

Some things that are clearly missing, if this was supposed to be a definitive tour of what the PS1 had to offer:

Bushido Blade
Crash
Spyro
Tomb Raider
Silent Hill
Castlevania SotN
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Wipeout
Dino Crisis 2
Future Cop LAPD
NBA Jam TE

rpgs:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Ocean 2
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Suikoden 1/2
Breath of Fire 3/4
Xenogears
Brave Fencer Musashi

re: PS Classic

Also Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, of course!

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon I can understand Crash and Spyro being missing if Activision wanted attention to stay on the remakes. THPS2 probably has a whole heap of licensing issues. But there's really no excuse for Tomb Raider not being there since they're working with Square for FF7.

re: PS Classic

@Dex Ah yeah. I should say my list is less "these should have been there" and more "I wish these were there"

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon For me TR in particular should be there because I'm struggling to think of any reason why it isn't

unless it's to do with MS having the marketing agreement for the reboots?

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon what the hell, there's almost no good rpgs on there. Final Fantasy VII and Wild Arms and that's it for NA, though JP gets SaGa Frontier too at least

re: PS Classic

@Felthry You could probably make a 20 game list with just the classic RPGs on the platform!

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon Let me see if I can!

Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Grandia
the Legend of Dragoon
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
SaGa Frontier
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
Wild ARMs
Wild ARMs 2
Xenogears

...I got sixteen. Having trouble thinking of other popular ones that aren't remakes (and lunar is already an edge case being a port)

re: PS Classic

@Felthry Here's some more, in no particular order:

Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Final Fantasy Tactics
Vagrant Story
Threads of Fate
Valkyrie Profile
Front Mission 3
Tactics Ogre

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon Ah, how did I forget all of those! I intentionally left out FFT because it's a tactics game and doesn't have the usual RPG mechanics beyond being turn-based and story-based (no exploration, etc)

Threads of Fate is one we really ought to play sometime, we've heard it's really good.

Oh yeah, isn't Thousand Arms another PS1 rpg?

re: PS Classic

@Felthry Yep! Thousand Arms is an rpg for the playstation that exists

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon I don't know how well-liked it is, it just came to mind for some reason

re: PS Classic

@Felthry honestly I can't say for sure; I've never been interested in checking it out because of the "dating sim aspects" that get top billing

PS Classic

@KommaChameleon ooo, the PS1 localization of persona!!!!! :0

PS Classic

@KommaChameleon @Dex what’s frustrating is that I’d take every jp exclusive over every western exclusive but half of them would be unplayable for me in Japanese :|

PS Classic

@KommaChameleon @Dex (though darius and gradius would be nice and still quite playable! Devil dice too tbh)

re: PS Classic

@poss_bot @Dex yeah, I would go to bat for Rayman and Oddworld but honestly who gives a h*ck about Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Rainbow Six, GTA-before-it-mattered, and Syphon Filter

re: PS Classic

@KommaChameleon @poss_bot I mean, Syphon Filter you can at least use as a history lesson about Sony Bend, I guess, how they went from Bubsy 3D to that to things like Uncharted Vita

But if you're doing history lesson ones, why not include Wipeout?

LB: The fact that it's got the first GTA, Rainbow Six, and Persona games in particular emphasize, to me at least, that this is meant to be a novelty "...and this is what things were like in the ancient 1990s!" item and not something people are meant to play for any appreciable length of time

@Lobst Yeeep. Unfortunately some people have this attitude towards old games in general. :(

PS Classic

The first Persona is a very good game, but it was famously butchered in localization. There's a far more complete version on PSP, available now digitally on PSTV (which is what Sony should be selling instead).

Why didn't they include Parasite Eve in the US instead, if they were going to the trouble of licensing it? That game is literally an American action movie in JRPG format
