additionally, Christianity is a blight on the world, but if it weren't Christianity being a blight, it'd be Judaism, Buddhism or something, the specifics of the faith are quite tangential to all the horror.

@porsupah to be fucking bitter, I figure humanity has three religions;
* a hippy-dippy love-fest, as demonstrated by people like Rumi, the Baal Shem Tov, Suzuki Shunryu, etc.
* all of this negative, vicious dogmatism, overlapping sick grabs for personal power
* Look, It's What We've Always Done
The exact faith and doctrine is pretty tangential to all this and since reality is nuanced, it's entirely possible for someone to practice two or all three of the above at once.

@Leucrotta Trump is the problem writ large: some people see *everything* as a zero-sum game, in which for them to win, others must lose. And so it is with his base.
So many have thrived on conflict, and still do, from tribes to nations; religion offers a convenient hook where authoritarianism and defeat of The Other may win. It needn't, of course, but the allure is strong where the desire rises for cultural unity and unquestioning acceptance of authority.
